Best New Writing is an annual anthology of fiction and creative nonfiction, including the winners of The Eric Hoffer Award for short prose and the Gover Prize for short-short prose. The Hoffer grand prizewinner, which carries a cash prize, and honored stories serve as the centerpiece of Best New Writing. Finalists for the Gover Prize can also be found iin BNW. All entries are previously unpublished in any form. We also accept submissions for cover artwork.
Regular Submission (including the Eric Hoffer Award)
Size limit: 10,000 words
Best New Writing accepts unpublished fiction and creative nonfiction under 10,000 words for publication and consideration for the Eric Hoffer Award for Prose. Submissions are read quarterly following the last day of March, June, September, and December. You will receive a response within two weeks of those dates. Simultaneous submissions cannot be considered. Please, no more than one submission per quarter. If your story was previously published, including on-line publications, please do not submit it.
The Gover Prize for Short-Short Stories - $5.00
Size limit: 500 words
The Gover Prize, named after groundbreaking author Robert Gover, awards an annual prize ($250) and publication in Best New Writing to the best short fiction and creative nonfiction. Entries are limited to 500 words or less. Finalists will be invited to a public reading of their work. Gover Prize winner and finalists will be published in the upcoming BNW edition.
Cover Art Submission
Best New Writing’s annual printed and electronic publication features one artist's work on the cover. Displayed without lettering or writing, this unique cover format showcases the artist on an international stage. Artwork should be constructed for print (CMYK format) and have no text or writing. Full byline and a cash prize ($75) will be awarded to the artist.
